Square reacts to Applewhite departure
With the recent departure of Alabama offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, Tide recruiting fans have begun to worry about the status of some of the Tide's top recruits, including defensive tackle commit Damion Square who was recruited by Applewhite. What was Square's reaction to the move?
"I heard the rumors before it happened and I was a little sad about it but nothing that would change my decision. I'm Alabama 100 percent and I'm rolling with the Tide. The only way I would consider changing is if Nick Saban left and that ain't gonna happen," Square said. "I committed to Alabama to win a championship and that's what we are going to do. If you aren't at Alabama or heading that way then you are in the wrong spot. I'm still excited from my visit and really I wish I could have stayed. I'm ready to be there now."
Square said that although he's disappointed his home state hero won't be at Alabama, he understands Applewhite's decision.
"He was a good dude and I understand having to do what is best for you. I personally don't agree that it is better but he is a Texas grad and I understand him wanting to go there and handle his business," Square said. "He's always been a good dude to me so I don't hold any hard feelings. I liked him and I'll always appreciate him recruiting me to Alabama because that is home for me."
Square, 6-foot-3, 270-pounds, chose the Crimson Tide over offers from Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas A&M and others. As a senior at Yates High School in Houston, Square compiled 97 tackles including 35 tackles for loss and 14 sacks.
