They say when a football player gets to college he has little free time due to the fact that so many hours are dedicated to being a student and a big-time collegiate athlete, where games, practices and film study eat up so many hours.

For some players, it's a culture shock. Others, like Lufkin's Jamarkus McFarland, are prepared for the daily grind.

McFarland, the state's top-ranked prospect for the class of 2009, keeps himself incredibly busy at an age where most young men his age are enjoying as much free time as possible. A normal Sunday for the big d-tackle includes a morning of church, an afternoon of film and weight room work, and an evening of work at his part-time job.

When he's not chewing up hours in the film room or at work, McFarland is dominating in the trenches for a Lufkin team that figures to make a deep run into the state playoffs, and schools are already in hot pursuit of the talented defensive tackle prospect.
