Passing on judgment
Charlie Weis sees more than most. But the Notre Dame head coach hasn't seen enough.
So ask Weis about his next starting quarterback, something his son has done more than once this month, and the coach will offer a quizzical glance before answering. Interest may drive questions about Brady Quinn's replacement, but intrigue won't fast forward college football's preeminent position battle.
Separating Evan Sharpley, Demetrius Jones, Zach Frazer and Jimmy Clausen takes practices, meetings and film sessions - lots of them. They've had a little bit of all three in the past week, but not enough to draft a depth chart based on something more than alphabetical order.
"It's four days," Weis said. "I think he's made some progress and we've seen some encouraging signs. It's way too early for me to be jumping on anyone's bandwagon."
