Looking ahead to 2008
Dan Sorensen
UteZone.com With the class of 2007 in the books, it's time to take a first look at ten potential impact players from the state of Utah in 2008. 2007 was an arguably down year talent-wise in the state of Utah. However, the state of Utah's class of 2008 is already looking to produce a solid crop of Division I caliber football players. Here is a list of seven players to keep an eye on over the next few months.
Sausan Shakerin - Alta High School Running Back 6-foot-3 205 pounds As a junior, Shakerin was the most dominant player in the state, leading Alta to the 5-A state title game. Shakerin has best potential of any player in the state, and could attract attention from big time programs before everything is said and done. He's a big game player whose 2355 yards in 2006 don't lie.
Austin Holt - Bingham Tight End 6-foot-5 220 pounds BYU's first commitment of 2008 is a solid player with nice potential that should fit in nicely in BYU's tight end friendly offense. Holt is a camp warrior that despite the hype surrounding him isn't as heavily utilized in Bingham's offense as he could be. He was named first team all state as a junior, and is likely to repeat as a senior.
David Kruger - Timpview Defensive Tackle 6-foot-5 270 pounds At 6-foot-5 inches and 270 pounds, Kruger is a huge lineman with tremendous upside. He was a stalwart at Timpview last season and has the size and strength to excel at the next level. Kruger already has offers from both Utah and BYU. His older brother Paul currently plays for the Utes.
Derek Tuimauga - Bingham Offensive Line 6-foot Another in the recent line of Division I caliber players at Bingham High School, Tuimauga is a massive offensive lineman that was a key contributor to last season's 5A championship team. Tuimauga was named first team all state as a junior.
Lynn Katoa - Cottonwood High School Linebacker 6-foot-2 215 pounds Katoa should be the top linebacker prospect coming out of the state of Utah next year. The versatile linebacker has a terrific combination of size and speed and is already receiving interest from schools in the Mountain West Conference and the PAC-10. Katoa took home second team all state honors last year.
Lewis Walker - Judge Memorial High School Defensive Back 5-foot-11 160 pounds Walker is a versatile athlete that excels on the track and the football field. The 5-foot-11 inch 160 pound speedster plays both ways for Judge, but projects as a defensive back at the Division I level. Expect Walker to be the top defensive back prospect coming out of the state of Utah in 2008.
Jefferson Court - Alta High School Linebacker 6-foot 3 200 lbs There's no question that Court can play, as the leader of Alta's defense was named a first team all state linebacker as a junior. Court could open up big opportunities for himself with solid performances during this summer's football camps and combines.
