Spring football review: Defense
After breaking down the offensive side of the ball Monday, we turn our attention to Duke's defense today.
After a few years of good recruiting and hard work, Duke has a good chance to field a very competitive defense in 2006. Coming out of spring practice, the Blue Devils have their most talented defensive lines in several years.
With solid experience at the top and young stalwarts rising up, the front four could prove to be a real eye opener for many observers.
The rest of the unit isn't bad either, with the linebackers headed up by a returning freshman All-American and the secondary anchored by a returning first team All-ACC cornerback.
Can the defense really put everything together this year and help Duke close the gap with the rest of the ACC?
The answer to that question depends on veterans providing leadership and some much hyped young guns rising to their expectations.
After spring practice, it's hard not to give into the temptation of being optimistic.
