Spartans close to adding another?
This weekend Michigan State hosted defensive lineman Noah Jones of Ft. Lauderdale Dillard High School on an official visit. SpartanMag.com caught up with the fast rising Floridian and got some details on his visit to East Lansing.
Earlier this week SpartanMag.com broke news that Jones not only had been offered by Michigan State University, but that he would be taking an official visit this weekend as well. In the last few weeks, Jones has picked up scholarship offers from Michigan State, Cincinnati, Florida Atlantic and Connecticut. The 6-foot-3, 275-pound prospect talked about his time on campus.
"I flew up on Friday, Jones said. My visit went very well, I would give it an A+. I loved how the school is like a family and not just a football team, but the students as well. My mom and grandma came with me and they loved it too."
While on campus Jones was able to spend plenty of time talking with the Spartan staff. We asked him about his interaction with them.
"The coaches are really good people, Jones said. I really liked how they put the players ahead of themselves."
With signing day fast approaching and scholarships very tight, Jones understands that a decision will have to be made in the near future. We asked him about his time-table for making his choice.
"I will be making my choice later this week. The coaches (Michigan State) are coming downs to see me on Wednesday."
If Jones selects the Spartans it looks as if he could be the final recruit for the class of 2013. Michigan State gained an extra spot or two based on the departure of 3 players to the NFL.
Matt Dorsey's Take: I expect that Jones will likely make a commitment to Michigan State on Wednesday when the coaches have in-home visit with him. The staff is still recruiting a few other players and could have them on campus next weekend, but this past weekend was the best shot to make something happen with some of those players. There is no way to duplicate the atmosphere that was on campus this past weekend with all of the committed prospects in the house as well as a huge home basketball visitor over the Buckeyes.
The Spartans will stop into see guys like Alec James, DeJuan Drennon and Greg Webb this week, but I expect all of those players to stick with their initial commitments. Jones is somewhat of a sleeper recruit, but if the staff takes his commitment it will be because they believe he has the upside to be a very good player for them. Mark Dantonio has shown in the past he will bank a scholarship rather than give it to somebody he does not feel can help the team win a championship.
Over the years the Spartans have added a few key recruits late in the process that were not being courted by a significant amount of BCS schools. Players like LeVeon Bell, Denzel Drone, Kevin Pickelman, Darquezze Dennard and David Fennell and come to mind.
