Could Kieler be the next Spartan
Last week SpartanMag.com informed Michigan State fans that not only was Kodi Kieler of Carlson High School in Gibraltar, Michigan one of the most intriguing uncommitted recruits in the state of Michigan, but that the 6-foot-6, 305-pound prospect would also be in East Lansing this weekend.
Kieler made the trip up to East Lansing today to meet watch the Spartans open practice and meet with the Michigan State staff. He talked with SpartsnMag.com about his day.
"It went really well," he said. "I was up there last fall for the Notre Dame game and I went to the spring game too so I am pretty familiar with Michigan State. I was able to talk with Coach Staten and Coach Dantonio. Coach Staten said he liked how athletic I was. He said I was very mobile for my size."
Did they talk about offering a scholarship?
"Yes, I went and sat down with Coach Dantonio in his office and we talked about it. He said he was going to go back and look at my film again. He said at the latest they would just wait until my first game and see me play and make a decision then. He said they already have two players who will likely be guards so they are looking for a tackle. He said they plan on taking one more, possible two but he is not sure."
Do you have a timetable for when you will make your choice?
Not really, a lot will depend on if Michigan State offers me. If they offer me it will be tough to pass up. I also have a few other Big Ten scholarships and a lot of MAC offers as well. I guess it just depends on what happens with State."
Kieler camped at the University of Michigan this summer. We asked him how that went and what feedback he received from the Wolverine staff.
"I went there for 1-Day. I was able to talk with the offensive line coach and I also talked with Coach Hoke. They said they liked me, but had not seen my film. They were planning on going back and watching it. Then they got a commitment from a player from Ohio (Kyle Kalis) and they filled up at the tackle spot."
Kieler informed Spartnamga.com that his team will open the season against Kennedy High School and he has been putting in lots of time in the gym preparing for the upcoming season.
"We have high expectations for the season. I think we have a great chance of going 8-1 or 7-2."
In addition to Kieler, Carlson High School also has another Division 1 recruit in Kyle Ready. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Ready has double-digit scholarship offers and is being looked at by both the Spartans and Wolverines.
