Buchanan names top five after Ole Miss visit
Ray Buchanan Jr. arrived in Oxford, Miss., Wednesday afternoon.
He left 5-6 hours later with Ole Miss very much a player in the race for his signature.
Buchanan, a 5-foot-10, 176-pound three-star cornerback from Suwanee (Peachtree Ridge), Ga., made the trip with a teammate and his father, former NFL All-Pro defensive back Ray Buchanan.
"I was really impressed once we drove on campus," Buchanan Jr. said. "We saw that everything was brand new and it really caught my eye."
Buchanan said he met with Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt, defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix and secondary coach Keith Burns during his visit.
"They were telling me they really needed corners," Buchanan said. "They said they were really short at cornerback. I'm looking for somewhere I can come in and make an early impact. That caught my interest.
Buchanan said his father, who recorded 47 interceptions during his NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders, "really liked it. He talked to the academic advisor and he really liked the head coach also."
Buchanan Jr., said Nutt "told us about the school. He said it's a real good family atmosphere."
Buchanan said he also visited Ole Miss' school of engineering and spoke to an advisor from the university's criminal justice department.
Buchanan said late Wednesday he is "looking to commit early, probably before the season starts or before the season starts."
Buchanan said he might attend Ole Miss' one-day senior camp on July 23. He said he will visit Arkansas on July 19 and is hoping to check out Illinois later this month as well. The Rebels, Buchanan said, "are really high. They're in my top five. They're really high on my list right now."
Buchanan said his top five consists of Ole Miss, Arkansas, Illinois, Purdue and Maryland.
"I'm glad I got to visit so I know my options and I know what to expect," Buchanan said.
