3-Star DT scheduled to visit Army
Although Mendota Heights (Minn.) St. Thomas Academy Anthony Hayes is a solid commit to Stanford, the 3-star defensive tackle has not completely discounted at least 4 other schools.
So much that the talented tackle has lined up official visits to at least two of those schools and a possible third, where both Army and Navy will have Hayes on campus this month. The Florida Gators appear to be third possibility.
For Army, getting Hayes on campus is only step one, albeit it a very important initial step. Obviously the ultimate goal is have the 6-foot-3, 290 pounder become a Black Knight, which would fill a major recruiting need for Coach Ellerson and staff.
With Mike Gann graduating, there is a necessity for the 2011 class to add size to the defensive interior, especially at the nose tackle.
"Most schools are recruiting me as a nose guard or defensive tackle," says Hayes, who is schedule to make his way to the West Point campus on January 21st.
So what is Hayes' level of interest in Army? "I am really interested in Army," he confirms, with footnote to follow. "I am 100% committed to Stanford, but if I don't get in there, Army is definitely one of my top choices."
"I have watched their games and they are a really good team and the program has made a great turnaround."
Hayes, who is being recruited at Army by Joe Ross, is quick to point out where he feels his strengths are as a defender, along with where the Black Knights' staff project him at the next level. "I'm strong at the point of attack and I try to cause as much destruction as I can."
"They see me playing nose tackle and a chance of me to play early
I would be a direct admit if I decide on Army."
And what is Hayes looking for in a school?
"I want to get the best education possible," declares the prospect out of the state of Minnesota. "I would like to go to the NFL, but education is first," says Hayes, who plans on majoring in economics."
In addition to his visits to Army and Navy, he is looking to decide on either Air Force or Florida for a visit on the 28th of January. He indicated that he is also trying to add an official visit to Minnesota to his January itinerary.
GoBlackKnights.com will continue to follow the progress of Hayes' recruiting.
