Return specialist has Utah, Ole Miss on top
For Philander Moore, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind.
It started when Moore's highlight tape from his season at Blinn (Texas) College was sent out to college coaches across the country.
Moore, a wide receiver/running back/return specialist from Austin, Texas, earned first-team NJCAA All-American honors after returning six punts and kickoffs for touchdowns.
However, Moore's life might have been most profoundly impacted by a simple Facebook message. Shortly after receiving the message on the social media website, Moore was on the phone with Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt.
"I like Houston Nutt," Moore said. "I like the way he talked to me and the way he plans on using me. He seems like an honest person, and I really like Ole Miss."
Moore, a 5-foot-10, 180-pounder, will visit Ole Miss officially in early January. He could potentially begin classes in Oxford later next month.
"I plan to know where I plan to go a day or two after I get back from Ole Miss," Moore said.
Moore was being recruited by several schools, most notably Missouri, two seasons ago before he broke his collarbone. Recruiting screeched to a halt, and Moore elected to go to Blinn. Two years later, Moore has offers from Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech, Utah, Texas Tech and heavy interest from Boise State.
Moore spent last weekend on an official visit to Utah. He said Tuesday he might take an unofficial visit to check out Texas Tech, but the Utes and Rebels appear to hold an edge.
"I'm pretty open," Moore said. "I'm going to keep my eyes open, but it's really coming down to those two unless something else pops up."
Moore added 330 yards and three touchdowns receiving and rushing for Blinn last season. He said most schools, including Ole Miss and Utah, are recruiting him as a versatile contributor.
"The best way to just describe me is as an offensive athlete," Moore said. "I have the speed of a running back or they can put me in the slot. On special teams, I love catching the ball and taking off with it. I'm just coming in to help."
