Bulldogs take down Troy in overtime
STARKVILLE, Miss., - Ravern Johnson scored 30 points in regulation but it took clutch free throws in overtime by Kodi Augustus and Brian Bryant for Mississippi State to claim a 92-83 victory over Troy Friday night.
The Trojans drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie things up at 74 and force the free basketball at Humphrey Coliseum. But MSU responded to outscore the Trojans 18-9 in the overtime period and improve to 4-0 on the young season.
"To our credit we could have folded many times in that game," said MSU head coach Rick Stansbury. "I'll take the positives from that. We didn't give up after we got down 10 in the second half. We found a way to fight back and got back in the game after going zone. The zone helped us get back in it."
Johnson led all scorers with a career-high 33 points including 7 3-pointers on the evening.
"With the way we are right now it's a lot more of a scoring role on me," Johnson said. "I accept it. It was another close game for us too and there are little things that we need to do to keep getting better as a team."
Overall the Bulldogs shot a season-best 12-of-26 behind the arc.
